Frequently asked questions

How do you avoid the risk of "single sourcing"?

Relying on a single supplier is a gamble these days. A strategy based on the Pareto principle (80/20) works well: route 80% of volume to the main partner to earn volume discounts, but deliberately place the remaining 20% with a backup. That keeps the backup in an active commercial relationship — and if the primary fails, you can scale up orders immediately without risking production.

How can you tell a supplier is in trouble before they fail to deliver?

Monitor the financial health of your business partners. Warning signs: revenue decline two years in a row, negative equity, growing indebtedness. The information is in public registries, but tracking it manually is impossible. Modern buyers use systems that alert them to changes in supplier creditworthiness automatically.

How do you push effectively for price cuts from existing suppliers?

The strongest argument is perfect market knowledge. If a supplier raises prices, don't argue over percentages. Run a quick market check — send a bulk RFQ to 50 similar manufacturers in the region (or in a cheaper country). With concrete quotes in hand, you have immediate negotiating leverage.

How do you tell a real manufacturer from a trader (reseller)?

Traders often add 20–30% to the price. You often can't tell from the website, but you can from the data. Filter companies by their main economic activity (NACE codes). Look for companies classified as "Manufacturing" (section C), not "Wholesale" (section G). You'll save the margin you'd otherwise pay to the middleman.

Is it safe to look for suppliers in eastern markets?

Yes, but it requires more thorough vetting. Beyond price, focus on stability and references. For foreign companies, having access to global data is critical so you can verify the company actually exists, how large it is, and whether it appears on any sanctions lists. Don't wire a deposit abroad without a data check.
